There’s a long list of things I always say I want to do and, unsurprisingly, I rarely get round to them. The excuses I make to put off my dreams are the ones we all make. ‘I don’t have enough time’, ‘I don’t have enough money’ or ‘I don’t know where to start’. It seems like there’s always a reason to not do the things we want to do. Then, to make ourselves feel better about it all, we say that we’re just being smart and realistic. Anyone else been there?
Writing a book, learning a language, starting a business, traveling the world – how many of us talk about doing these things and how many of us actually go and do them? Recently I’ve caught myself saying ‘I’ll do it someday’ when I’m talking about things I want to achieve and I’ve realised that, in my haste to grow up, I’ve lost a bit of my ‘I can do anything’ spirit. It’s as if self-belief is this magic fairy dust that slowly fades away as we enter adulthood. I’m not a doer anymore and that makes me so disappointed in myself. Doers have the power to create, influence and change the environment around them and people who aren’t doers…well they just don’t.
I decided it was time to start being a doer again so here I am, writing this blog post on the plane to Thailand for my first solo adventure. There have been many moments when I’ve thought about the trip and worried I made the wrong decision but, the truth is, I would never know without going.
If someone had said to me ‘hey, you can’t do that – you’re crazy’ I wouldn’t have let them tell me what to do. So why is it that I let the voice in my head stop me from stepping outside my comfort zone? We’re all guilty of letting our doubts get the best of us sometimes and it’s taken a lot of courage for me to stand up to my stubborn inner-self and say ‘Freya, you are fabulous and capable of doing anything so just get on with it’.
If you have dreams you want to chase but you’ve let reality get in the way here are my top three tips for being a doer…
Stop doubting & start doing
One of the main reasons people put off their creative pursuits is because of this idea of ‘perfection’. We worry that unless things are perfect – they aren’t worth doing and that’s simply not true. Next time you doubt your ability to do something step outside your comfort zone. The only way to learn is by doing so write that book, start that business or build that blog – I promise you will surprise yourself when you stop doubting and start doing.
Stop waiting for someone
So many of us rely on other people for our own happiness. I will admit, I’m very guilty of doing this and it’s a hard habit to break. There have been so many art exhibitions, music concerts and plays that I wanted to see but didn’t go to because I couldn’t find a friend to bring. How stupid is that! From now on I’m not going to be afraid of going it alone and neither should you. Sure, it’s great to go places with friends but if we wait for people to accompany us on all our adventures then they’ll never happen so stop dreaming and go.
Stop saying tomorrow
I know a lot of people that read this blog are students like me and I think being young is a huge excuse for procrastinating. How often do we say ‘I’ll get round to it someday’ or ‘I’ll do it when I’m older’? Every day is an opportunity to get one step closer to becoming the person you want to be so start today, not tomorrow.
